Family Activity : Creation Time

Today we started a new activity in our house - Family Creation Time. Long term I suspect that there will be multiple activities that may occur during this time, but for the moment we are focusing on painting and drawing using a mixture of mediums - watercolour and acrylic paints, crayons, coloured pencils, oil pastels and chalk.

We each have our own dedicated spiral bound watercolour pad to house our creations and there is only one rule - You are only allowed to create in YOUR OWN book:

I am hoping that this will assist in building confidence in our own creative abilities:

While enabling us to have a little quality time together as a family at the end of a long day:

Who knows, maybe we even have a Picasso-in-the-making among us:

I have to admit that I struggled a little with our first session. I felt a little anxious as I carefully placed each brush stroke on my pad, while looking around hesitantly to see whether anyone was looking at what I was creating.

After a while, I put down my brush and sat and watched Corben. I was amazed at how effortless he made the whole process seem. He wasn't looking around, wondering if people were thinking that his art work was crap. He was totally immersed in what he was doing, smiling and saying to himself "Good work. Good work".

I picked up my brush again and just started painting, trying not to over think things. You know what? After a couple of minutes things started to flow a bit better and I actually found it relaxing:

I should have done this a long time ago. Who knows how much money I could have saved on therapy!

  1. Awesome idea Michelle! Although oil pastels in the hands of a child (my child?) is slightly terrifying!
